Bergen, Norway – February 4, 2025 – In a groundbreaking development for the offshore and marine industry, Corvus Energy, the leading provider of zero-emission solutions, has announced its role in delivering a mega-size battery system for the world’s first fully electric offshore vessel. This pioneering electric Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV) will be constructed at the Armon shipyard in Spain for UK-based shipowner Bibby Marine Ltd.

A World-First in Offshore Operations

The vessel, the first of its kind, will be equipped with Corvus Energy’s Blue Whale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), providing nearly 25MWh of power. This makes it the largest Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery system ever integrated into a maritime project.

“A fully electric offshore vessel is something the industry has been working towards for a long time and marks a major milestone in offshore vessel operations,” said Pål Ove Husoy, VP Sales at Corvus Energy. “This eCSOV will be the first offshore vessel capable of operating entirely on battery power for a full day, setting a new standard for future offshore vessels. The combination of battery power and dual-fuel methanol engines will significantly reduce carbon emissions while improving energy efficiency, without compromising on reliability or performance for demanding offshore wind and renewable operations.”

Optimized Power Distribution for Efficiency

Corvus Energy has collaborated closely with Bibby Marine, the vessel’s designers, and system integrators to ensure optimal system design. Unlike conventional hybrid systems, this vessel will use its large battery pack as the primary power source. The engines will run only for recharging purposes, operating at a constant optimized load to maximize efficiency, extend battery lifespan, and drastically cut emissions. The vessel will also feature an innovative DC grid architecture that minimizes energy losses and ensures seamless power distribution.

Additionally, offshore charging capabilities will allow the eCSOV to charge its batteries while maintaining dynamic positioning (DP) for station-keeping. This feature represents an industry first in the Service Operation Vessel (SOV) market and is expected to revolutionize offshore energy operations.

Driving the Path to Net-Zero

Gavin Forward, New Build Director at Bibby Marine, highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “We are excited to collaborate with Corvus on this pioneering eCSOV project, setting a new benchmark for sustainable offshore operations and driving the future of zero-emission vessel technology.”

He further emphasized that Bibby Marine selected Corvus Energy based on its proven track record of delivering complex vessel projects, as well as the benefits of LFP battery chemistry. “This battery technology aligns perfectly with our eCSOV’s operational profile, offering enhanced safety, longevity, and reliability for a project that will accelerate the path to net-zero for the maritime sector,” he added.

Future Deployment and Impact

The Corvus Energy equipment is scheduled for delivery to the shipyard in 2026, with the vessel expected to enter operation in 2027. It will play a vital role in supporting the commissioning and operation of offshore wind farms, reinforcing the maritime industry’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and advancing sustainable energy solutions.
